Annual training activities<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The PhD course in Global Studies provides a series of specific training activities for PhD students. Among these, a cycle of seminars on research methodology, whose dates and modalities of attendance are communicated to the students in due time. Other master classes, courses or seminars may be introduced during the course of the year, and these are always highly recommended mainly for I and II year\u2019s students. III year\u2019s students are also invited to attend. Concerning other activities and classes, doctoral students are invited to build their training by drawing on courses of the University or of other Universities in Italy and abroad (for example, taking part to single courses, summer or winter schools, workshops, schools of methodology). At Global Studies there is no specific number of hours or CFU to be acquired during the yea<\/u>r. This does not mean, however, that one should not refine his\/her training. It simply means that the training will be constructed by the doctoral student himself\/herself according to his\/her own research needs.\u00a0 The coordinator and the tutor will then evaluate the paths built by each one annually. In the section forms <\/a>there is the document “annual activities form<\/strong>” to be filled throughout the year. This must submitted at the end of the year, during the admission to the following years, to the \u201ccollegio docenti\u201d and SDA. The form is named \u201cScheda annuale delle attivit\u00e0<\/em><\/a>\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

Supervision<\/strong><\/h4>\n

During the first faculty meeting at the beginning of the academic year, each first-year doctoral student is assigned one or more potential tutors. These are professors who, for disciplinary and thematic relevance, are considered to be the most suitable to supervise the development of the project, at least in the initial phase. It often happens that the tutors are several and coming from different disciplines. Don’t worry! This means that the project has attracted the interest of several professors. It will be up to each student, during the course of the year and in general throughout the PhD, to decide which disciplinary cut to give to the research and therefore which professor is the more appropriate to supervise the work. Although the norm is to choose a supervisor\/tutor within the University of Macerata, it is also possible to have an external supervision for the project (provided that the supervisor is available to supervise the project and that the \u201ccollegio docenti\u201d approve the choice). Co-supervision by an external Professor is now a common practice.<\/p>\n

Admission to the following years<\/strong><\/h4>\n

At Global Studies the evaluation for admission to the following years takes place between October and November of each year (unless an extension has been requested — provided only for cycles impacted by the pandemic). Around the end of September\/beginning of October, the course coordinator sends an email to all doctoral students with useful information about the passage of the year. Generally this consists in sending a document to the tutor: for I-year-students this is a reasoned division of the thesis project into chapters and\/or a new\/extended version of the research project (about ten pages long). To avoid misunderstandings, it is recommended to talk with the tutor(s) about what type of document should be produced. For subsequent years, the document to be submitted consists of the progresses made in writing until then (usually one chapter or more). After few weeks from the submission, there will be a meeting between all GS students, the coordinator and all tutors. The coordinator and the prof(s) of the faculty will convene the student(s)* to communicate the general evaluation of their work. Generally the meeting is formal, but friendly and takes place online. In addition, it is necessary to submit to the tutor and to the School of Doctoral Studies (SDA) the annual activity form (it is advisable to update it from time to time throughout the year).<\/p>\n

Funds for research and training activities <\/strong><\/h4>\n

For the the I year of research our Department, SPOCRI, provides an individual fund of 300\/350 euros per doctorand* for training activities. Attention: only and exclusively in this case, the request to draw on the fund must be made before enrolling in any paid activity, whose application fee will then be paid by the Department itself. In order to forward the request, it is necessary to ask Fiorella De Ciocchis (fiorella.deciocchis@unimc.it<\/a> – SPOCRI administrative manager) for the reimbursement of the necessary sum, but only after receiving the authorization of Prof. Barbisan, formal owner of the funds. For example: if you want to enroll during the first year to a conference that foresees a registration fee of 30 euros, first send an email to Barbisan where you inquire on the authorization to use the funds of the first year, specifying for what you will need them; once obtained her favorable opinion, send the formal request (an email is enough) to Fiorella De Ciocchis, putting in cc Barbisan and also Cosimo Leccese (payment manager for the Administrative and Financial Office, cosimo.leccese@unimc.it<\/a> ). N.B. the 350 euros of SPOCRI are valid only for the I year! If not used in full, they will not remain available for the years following the first and will therefore be lost. The II and III year, all doctoral students are entitled to a fund for research activities provided by the Doctoral School, SDA. In this case, the funds must be requested for reimbursement, therefore only after the completion of the activity, the payment of which must be anticipated by you. All information about this can be found on the website of the doctoral school.<\/p>\n
